my walk shapes

an apple healthkit experiment

In November of 2018, I received an Apple Watch and began focusing a bit more on my fitness goals. One of these goals was to walk at least 30 minutes a day.

As I got some walks under my belt, I realized that I had a lot of data sitting at my fingertips — Apple does a great job of collecting all kinds of metrics using the iPhone and Watch in tandem, and stores all this data in their HealthKit APIs.

The "glyphs" below are a result of normalizing recorded walking routes to pixel coordinates and mapping them over HTML canvas elements. Sprikle in a little CSS and—voilà—a heap of data-driven, generative art.
